Speech and Debate has long been known to help students become more articulate and confident when voicing their opinions. It will help your child with his/her critical thinking and make him/her a more informed and active member of society! The skills acquired in Speech and Debate help your child in all their classes; that's why the average debate student is in the top 10% of their class!
The benefits of speech and debate extend far past an academic setting - your child will gain the confidence to form and present well-developed opinions and to a large audience! The articulation and presentation skills acquired in Speech and Debate give your child an advantage in non-educational scenarios, like college and job interviews! Whether it be the workforce, medicine, or starting their own business, students can use their public speaking skills and critical thinking to communicate effectively in every facet of life! In fact, state and national Speech and Debate award winners have a 22% - 30% higher acceptance rate in colleges!
World Schools Debate is the newest form of debate offered in TFA (Texas Forensic Association) and NSDA (National Speech and Debate Association) circuit tournaments! Each World Schools team is comprised of 3-5 debaters who will compete with prepared motions and impromptu motions! The motion are usually complex issues regarding medicine, economy, politics, science, and philosophy. World Schools Debate challenges debaters to think critically about real-world issues, and encourages them to stay informed about contemporary problems and view issues from multiple perspectives. World Schools Debate is different from other types of debate in that how arguments are presented and received by others is a factor alongside the content of your speech. That means debaters are not only encouraged to adopt critical thinking, but the skills to be able to articulate themselves and communicate their own ideas.
World Schools Debate is a combination of prepared motions and impromptu motions. With prepared motions, your child will research contemporary issues to prepare a "case" supporting or negating the motion (topic). Not only will your child gain more knowledge about real-world issues, but your child will view issues from a plethora of different perspectives, thus encouraging them to develop more well supported opinions about current events! But it doesn't stop there! With impromptu motions, your child will be given 1 hour to prepare and debate a motion (topic) without prior preparation, which helps your child develop the skills to create a comprehensive argument and defense with minimal preparation! World Schools not only helps your child develop oratorical skills, but it will help your child identify fallacies and create defensible arguments to use in their everyday lives. World Schools Debate is unique in that it most resembles real-world communication. The debate form emphasizes the combination of arguments and ideas with presentation, teamwork, and strategy. These elements combined, help students to prepare for their future by building the foundational set of skills required for university and the business environment.

The structure of our courses vary by the level of the program and are designed to lead into each other as students progress to higher skill levels. We will look into the makings of a speech and argumentation so students will be able to develop organized speeches and effective arguments. We will also work on presentation, strategy, time management, team strategy, case construction, and a variety of other essential public speaking and debate skills. The program also covers life essentials like research skills and situational awareness in conversation and speech. Most importantly, we emphasize the application of all the learned skills and place a heavier emphasis on practice and individual feedback. Contact us at debatekaty@gmail.com if you have any questions!
